Acute Care Services

Crisis Stabilization Unit

Our Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) is a 20-bed, secure, therapeutic milieu that provides short-term inpatient psychiatric services for individuals 18 years and older. Our goal is to provide safe and individualized care to all patients, whether on an involuntary or voluntary status, per Florida’s Baker Act. The CSU is a DCF-designated receiving facility which screens, assesses, and admits individuals brought to the unit under Section 394.463, F.S. Our goal is to stabilize and redirect patients to the most appropriate and least restrictive community setting available, consistent with the client’s individual needs. Our patients present with a diverse range of diagnoses and functional and cultural backgrounds.  We treat a wide range of diagnoses including psychotic disorders (such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorders, mood-induced psychotic disorders), mood disorders (such as major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, PTSD, and other anxiety disorders), and personality disorders (such as borderline personality disorder). Treatment modalities may include:

  • Psychiatric Evaluation
  • Physical Examination
  • Blood Tests
  • Medication Monitoring
  • Crisis Intervention and Resolution
  • Group Meetings
  • Patient Education
  • 24-Hour Nursing and Observation
  • Discharge Planning

Our CSU treatment team consists of a psychiatrist, psychologist, licensed nurse, mental health techs, and discharge planners.  We provide a comprehensive and integrated treatment approach from admission through discharge. Our CSU staff’s clinical expertise and compassion facilitate our goal of providing optimal mental health care to all our patients until they can be stabilized and returned to a state of healthy functioning and well-being. Our CSU accepts indigent referrals and has contractual agreements with a number of guarantors in the Tampa Bay Area.

Forensic Programs

Northside’s Forensic Programs provide an array of in-jail and community-based services that collectively seek to reintegrate mentally ill offenders into their home communities and facilitate successful role recovery.  Our in-Jail services include mental health counseling, psychiatric consultation, case coordination, and competency restoration programming for felony-charged mentally ill individuals who have a specific legal status related to trial competence or criminal responsibility. Our Forensic Community-based programs provide assessment and case management services to a wider range of criminal justice-involved individuals with mental illness, including those returning from the Florida Department of Corrections, the State Hospital System, or the County Jail.  Our Forensic programs promote continuity of care, and assist individuals in achieving independence and self-sufficiency after discharging from jail, prison, or the state hospital. Our forensic case managers utilize a strength-based approach when problem solving with the client and also provide assistance in the following areas:

  • Housing
  • Resume Building
  • Vocational Rehabilitation
  • Employment
  • Health Insurance Applications
  • Transportation
  • Food, Clothing, and Basic Necessities
